Morse Code Intercom App DESCRIPTION

My app mimics a Morse transceiver that can send and receive perfect Morse on any of 20 channels, at a speed of 5 to 32 wpm. Receive sidetone can be set between 400 and 1000 Hz.

You don’t need to create an account, or register an IP address.

You can restrict users to those directly connected to your WiFi network (for family or radio club use), or use external servers to communicate with other users anywhere on the Internet. ** NB: As of February 2020 the free P2P servers my app used to implement Internet mode have been switched off. I hope to host my own P2P server in due course, but for now avoid Internet Mode **.

You can also use my app as a Morse trainer (three training modes are available). Training modes match or surpass those of other apps.

Versions that run in a webpage, or as a standalone laptop/desktop app are available.

My app does not pester for a rating (but ratings and reviews are much appreciated). My app only asks for permissions it really needs.

SELECTING STARTUP MODE:

At startup you will be asked to ‘Set Startup Mode For Morse Intercom’.

WiFi Startup: Intercom (transceiver) Mode is restricted to other users connected to your WiFi network who also started the app using ‘WiFi Startup’. Great for family or radio club use. If you switch to Training Mode virtually all training options work (including RSS newsfeed to Morse) – only messages from remote users NOT connected to your local network does not work.

NB: If you start the app in WiFi Mode you are not visible to any user not directly connected to your local network.

Internet Startup: ** Avoid for now as the free P2P servers I used have been switched off **

SWITCHING TO TRAINING MODE:

Whatever you select for ‘Startup Mode’ (WiFi or Internet), Morse Code Intercom always starts up in Intercom (transceiver) Mode. You have to switch into Training Mode. I plan to add the capability to start in Training Mode as many users only want to use this mode.

Shifting into Training Mode is very easy. Tap the ‘Enter Training Mode’ button, then tap ‘OK’ on the screen that pops up.

Training Mode lets you define the playback speed and sidetone frequency. You can add Farnsworth delays between received characters, reduce audio clipping that would occur with certain speed/sidetone-frequency combinations by adding a slow decay to the volume of received dots and dashes etc. Training options currently available:

i) Local:
Your device sends you 5 character random groups. You define which characters can be generated (including ITU recognised punctuation characters), and the relative frequency with which these characters are generated. By default, only alphabetics and numerals are generated, and alphabetics are generated 5 times as often as numerals, but you have total contol over which characters can be generated and with what frequency they are generated.

Local mode can be configured to learn using the popular Koch method. Define an initial two characters, store them, learn to recognise these characters 80 to 90 percent of the time, then add another character and repeat until you’ve learnt the entire code.

ii) Newsfeed:
Headlines are sent to you from a BBC newsfeed in Morse code. Learn Morse and stay updated with the latest news at the same time! Tap ‘Show Story’ and the entire story behind the headline will be displayed in your browser. Feedback tells me this is by far the favourite training option, and is one reason I intend to add more newsfeeds.

NB: RSS newsfeeds work even if the app is started in WiFi Mode.

iii) Remote
Receive training messages from other users using the app in Intercom Mode.

If you like Morse Code Intercom please rate it in the PlayStore.

Morse Code Decoder
Decodes Morse Code audio to text. Optimized for decoding weak, fading signals in the noise and interference, especially on the Amateur Radio bands. Optionally highlights Ham callsigns and keywords. The audio may come either from the built-in microphone or from another device, such as a radio, via an audio cable. Decoding is performed using the same algorithms as used in CW Skimmer.
Morse Decoder for Android
Morse Decoder decodes Morse code characters through the built-in microphone of your Android device.Morse Decoder can be used by Ham Radio (Amateur Radio) operators or anyone else interested in decoding Morse code from a Radio or any other device.Morse Decoder includes a "waterfall" to show a frequency spectrum of about 50Hz to 2300Hz. A narrow band DSP filter can be set for the frequency of the Morse code tones by tapping the waterfall. The DSP filter is followed by an automatic gain control (AGC) to compensate for changing signal strengths. The detected signal will be shown as a graph and several algorithms will then detect the speed of the Morse code and convert them into readable text. Speeds of less than 4 Wpm (Words per Minute) to more than 50 Wpm can be decoded. For any question please visit our new forum at http://www.wolphi.com/forum/This is the first version of Morse Decoder. It has been tested on several Android devices and it performed very well or even better than PC based decoding software. However, since we are not able to test the performance on..

X can be an amount between 1-9. Those characters can be individually selected. If you want to learn just "s","i" and "e" just select the 3 letters and Morse Trainer will create groups of X with those 3 letters. The characters can also be chosen from 20 lessons of the Koch method.- Real ham radio callsign..

Abhinav

Brother, status shows not connected in internet mode, though i have 4g internet with excellent speed
----------
Abhinav Shukla, You are correct I'm afraid! Internet Intercom mode depended on free peer 2 peer Adobe servers, but Adobe turned these off in February 2020. Intercom mode still works in WiFi mode as do all the training modes. I intend to host my own peer 2 peer server, but for technical reasons I will probably have to publish a completely new app.

Eric

Not what I was expecting. Looking for a trainer to send/receive morse code as well as being tested on the cw. Much like some trainers that let you get graded on your ability to write the corresponding letters/numbers or "." and "-", but to messages sent to and from other users.
----------
Hi Eric, My app started life as just the TX/RX, but soon I added a training mode. In training mode you have three options: 1) Local - you define what you want sent, how often etc. 2) Newsfeed - get headlines from the BBC. 3) Remote - other users send you training messages. Add Farnsworth delays, dot/dash decays ..., in all modes. 73 de Graham

Abdullah

Need more active users
----------
Hi Abdullah - from feedback I know the majority of users of my app only use the training options. Those who use the Intercom mode tend to restrict it to WiFi. Please spread the word to increase Intercom mode usage. 73 de Graham (G4BUF)

Michael

This app is tremendously useful. I had been using an older version on a PC, but THIS is FANTASTIC. The newsfeed works perfectly and the practice runs are fun. Thanks Graham! ,73 KX3P
----------
Thanks Michael. After I've sorted out some health issues, I've got several new ideas for the app. 73 de Graham

Armando

I opened your guys's app and it's telling me I need Adobe Player so I click install and Google Play doesn't recognize that app. So I tried the desktop app and it says I need to upgrade my player but it's not my player it's your guys's player
----------
Hi Armando. The problem was Adobe removed the AIR 'shared runtime' from the play store which my app needed. I've now released Version 8.0.2 of Morse Code Intercom which 'captures' and releases the AIR runtime as part of the app. Please try my app again, and I hope you might update your rating. 73 de Graham

Awsome dude!
----------
Google translated 한덕상 to Handeok Sang and said it was Korean. Did Google get it right? Thanks so much for the review. Does Korean Morse have an escape mechanism to allow you to switch out of, then back into, International Morse allowing specific Korean characters to be sent? I know Japanese does. Google mentions SKATS. 고맙습니다 73 de Graham

Excellent app! I use Morse Intercom daily to work on my copying speed. I highly recommend Morse Intercom to anybody who wishes to improve their CW skills. John, VA3KOT
----------
Thanks for the nice review John. Glad you find it useful. My app doesn't pester for ratings and reviews but, when received, they are really appreciated. I've noted your comments on Facebook about adding 18wpm and storing training options. Both will happen! 73 de Graham (G4BUF)

Dale

Superb app for anyone interested is learning and using Morse code. Highly recommend it.
----------
Thanks for the review Dale. Glad you enjoyed Santa sending Christmas jokes in Morse, and sorry the xyl wasn't so impressed! In 2018 I'll probably work on splitting the existing app in two, into the Intercom and the Trainer. 73 de Graham and Happy New Year!

John

An excellent app for those skilled in, or wanting to learn more about Morse code (CW)
----------
Thank you for your kind words and the 5* rating. Any problems, ideas how the app could be inproved etc., please email me at graham.jolley.apps@gmail.com 73 de Graham

Mark

App is very nice. Have not tried the intercom feature, but enjoy the training mode (especially the RSS to CW feature) quite a bit. The UI is a bit sluggish - perhaps that's due to the author using Adobe Air as a platform.
----------
Thanks for the 5* review Mark. I've replied to you more fully on Facebook about the user interface being sluggish, but I think it is probably more my problem than AIRs. If you want to try Intercom Mode, email me and we can arrange a sched. Don't worry about not copying everything - that's what the 'Show Last Msg' button is for :) 73 de Graham

SpaceNoo..

.... .. love the app
----------
Thanks for your rating - bugs, ideas for improvements please email me - one thing I'm thinking of is splitting the current app into two apps, the Intercom and the Trainer - both would retain the current 'look and feel' - 73 Graham (G4BUF)

Barefoot

Great tool to hone your skills when you can't get to a radio. Newsfeed is a nice feature for random sentence generating as well. Well done!
----------
Thanks for nice review, The newsfeed option should make learning Morse more interesting than listening to endless 5 character random groups (although that option is built in). I intend to add more feeds. I'm also working on a wordlist option for generating random words, with the twist that you can overwrite it with your own list 73 Graham pip pip

George

Chatted with the developer for anhour or so using the app, I use it at home to teach my son to copy cw. Keep up the good work G4BUF!
----------
George, Thanks for the two QSOs and your kind review. You asked about a straight key option. For now, try apps such as 'Morse Code Minimalist Keyboard' by Daniel C Cohen, or 'Morse Straight Key' by Savanto. Sorry I dign't remember our first QSO straight away - I'll mod the app to remember QSOs between sessions - coming soonish! 73 Graham (G4BUF)

PaulC

Truly awfull App...spent two days waiting for people to connect...But no one used the software. The interface was very basic.. Sorry bit i wont be trying this again
----------
In Internet Mode you won't see users using the app in WiFi Mode (explicitly recommended for informal family or radio club use, and all but one training mode). In Internet Mode, with users in timezones from Australia to the UK, contacts can log on and off at any time, day or night on any of 20 channels. You have to catch them! 73 Graham (G4BUF)

Ed

I installed this, played with it a bit, and had a QSO in munutes. All at 3am!! I have to admit though that I had to have the app decode the message. I'm just learning the code and using the Farnsworth method so I know my letters at high (10-12 wpm) but recognition is still slow. Wish I could adjust the speed my self, but still leave longer gaps. I'm suggesting this app in all my Fb radio groups.
----------
Hi Ed, Thanks for the nice review. Currently there are 4 speeds (8, 16, 24, and 32wpm). You can apply short/medium/long Farnsworth delays at these speeds. Have you tried 'Training Mode'? I've just released v7.0.0 which lets you use an RSS news feed to obtain training messages. 73 Graham

Ian

Very good
----------
Thanks for the 5* review Ian. Try the new 'Training Mode'. It can be accessed directly from the main screen. It allows your device to generate and send you random Morse. You no longer need someone else to send you Morse for practice. You decide which characters can be generated. I'm working on obtaining the data from a RSS newsfeed. 73 Graham

Jotoney

Seems like a good app so far
----------
Hi Jotoney, Thanks for the 4* review. Let me know via graham.jolley.apps@gmail.com if you have problems. I've just published an update. All it changes are two of the help screens, but these are important as they describe better how to set up one to one and several to several nets, and how you now have 20 instead of just 4 channels.

docinha

Any skeds? Eager to QSO. Tu Fb!
----------
CQ Docinha Docinho, Thanks very much for the 5 stars I pop up now and again as G4BUF - QSO Welcome!! 73 Graham pip pip

Derek

Excellent 'App' - Especially for the Radio Amateur. Recommended.
