Chess for Android Game DESCRIPTION

Chess for Android consists of a chess engine and a GUI. The application accepts moves through the touch screen, trackball, or keyboard (e2e4 pushes the king pawn, e1g1 castles king side, etc.). An optional “move coach” highlights valid user moves during input and last played engine move. Full game navigation enables users to correct mistakes or analyze games. Games import and export as FEN/PGN to and from the clipboard or via sharing, load and save as file, or are set up through a position editor. A draw by stalemate, insufficient material, the fifty move rule, or threefold repetition is recognized. The engine plays at various levels (including random, against itself in auto-play, or free-play, where the game can be used as a “magnetic chessboard”). The user can play either side and, independently, view the board from the perspective of white or black.

The application supports the Universal Chess Interface (UCI) and Chess Engine Communication Protocol (WinBoard and XBoard), which allows users to play against more powerful third party engines or even play tournaments between engines. Engines are imported in Android Open Exchange format (OEX), in Android Chessbase compatible format, or directly from SD card. Engine setup features time control, pondering, infinite analysis, hash tables, multiple threads, endgame tablebases, and opening test suites.

The application connects to an external electronic chessboard (Certabo, Chessnut, ChessUp, DGT, or Millennium) and supports online play on FICS (Free Internet Chess Server) or ICC (Internet Chess Club).

No ads,no purchases, getting used to the voice :) Does exactly what it says on the tin Nice shapes, nice boards, nice colours Will have to get the old Kasparov book out if I ever want to get past my 8 move limit, even on easy I still can't deafet it :) I did say no ads no purchases right? ♾️👍

Thank you very much for your 5-star review!!!

I enjoy this a lot but there needs to be a way to disable notification everytime you let the cpu make a move or you castle etc. It bogs down the app and gets annoying fast. Edit: These are not SPOKEN MOVES this is a text notification when the computer makes a move on your behalf. Edit: I have also noticed the AI is limited in the moves it will do, becoming extremely predictable you can play the same game over and over again if not careful, even when changing difficulty. Edit: still not fixed.
----------
You can disable the spoken moves in the options menu. See https://www.aartbik.com/android_manual.php for details. Ah, the pop up when switching sides, yes I am working on having control over that! Thanks for the suggestion.

Muhammad

It's a chess GUI. As simple as that and a good one with no ads and no unnecessary distractions with only the necessary information. One suggestion I have is for the app to have a way to visualize imported engine analysis result as in best moves and such. But, this is overall a great app and in my opinion one of the best chess gui especially for android, and it's free with no annoying ads!
----------
Thanks for the kind review!

James

This game plays more moves ahead than I do and has a pretty good repertoire of patented first moves. I'm getting to where I often have the same pieces the computer does at end of the game, but I have only won three times. Sometimes I think it goes easy on me and I wish it could generate a report of anytime it deviates from the norm if it does.
----------
Thanks for the 5 stars!

Marc

Could not be better. The perfect chess game. No pointless distractions, just a basic 2d chess board, with amazing programming behind the scenes. I love this. It's depressing how quickly it does its moves on the level I can cope with. But, after lots & lots of attempts, I finally beat it (level 1. I'm no expert) Multi player works brilliantly too, there simply isn't a downside to this chess app. Look no further. Trust me 😉

Thanks!

Martin

This is a really great program. ,NO ADs! No in game purchases! I've become a far better chess player from this program. The detailed opening book that learns as you learn how to play against it makes for a constant challenge after you eventually learn how to beat the initial best moves of the program. The go back arrow allows you to back track to where the computer got the advantage. The upshot is that I'm a far better chess player. Ive had many hours of entertainment from the program.

Erzahler

This is a very good, no frills chess app. Multiple skill levels from easy to hard. The player can start easy as a beginner then increase his skill level as ability improves. Just as with a real chess match, there is no background music to distract the player. All in all, a very good app! 👍

Sandeep

The Developer has put forth an AI which is extremely strong! There are 10 levels and each successive level beginning from 1 becomes more and more stronger! After level 6, it is very difficult to beat the AI, which is very good! Another important thing is that the AI calculates variations deeply and accurately which in turn makes You strive harder to try to beat the AI! I have managed to get to level 8, though after suffering many losses! Exceptional Value For Chess Mastery! Warmest Regards! SG.

Thank you very much for such a kind review.

Yes! Finally, a way to record a game I'm playing with someone on FB, correspondence chess, and keep it current (using free play mode). I can take a screenshot after each of us moves and post it. It's a nice big board, good pieces, and color options. I can flip the board, too, since I'm playing black. I can exit the game and when I start it up, everything is just the way I left it. The only thing that would be nice is if I could save multiple games instead of being limited to one.
----------
Thanks for your kind review. And you *can* store multiple games, either in memory slots or as PGN files on SD card. Please see https://www.aartbik.com/android_manual.php for an overview of all features, game wise, but also electronic chess board support, and FICS and ICS.

Milock

Simple, complete, enlightening. I love this app. After years of struggling with a chess addiction, I finally found an app to help me give up the game. Since I lose 99% of the time on the lowest difficulty setting, I finally realized that im never going to get any better and its best to just quit while I'm behind. 😆. Thank you!
----------
Well, thanks for the 5 stars, but please don't give up on chess. It is practice that makes better. I put the game out there for free simply for the love of the game, not to scare people away from chess ;-)

Carlos

It's a cool app. I can't get enough of it but it's extremely hard. There aren't any levels. You can't get better because every move you make it countered by a master move. It doesn't matter how much you "undo" because the engine will find a way to win. It finally "allowed" me to gain a material advantage enough to win--almost 30 moves later. I think it got back into master mode as soon as it gave away the advantage. It's fun to play (eyes mode) but sucks if you're looking to build confidence. ☹

Lol

All you need in an offline chess app and nothing you don't. Elegant, solid, and totally brutals. Level 1 will eat you the moment you make a mistake, so it's not great for beginners; but it's nothing a yasser seirawan book can't fix. I play most games as Black(switch sides, flip board), but occasionally I win. If you play tightly and stay flexible, your human insight can juke the algorithm and beat it at its own game, which is quite rewarding. It's great for practice and study.
----------
Thank you!

The game looks pretty slick on android platform. One feature which is missing is that the human player can only play as white and not as black in the game. It would be nice to have a feature to switch sides and invert the board at any instant. This would enable the human player to ponder moves from a opponent's point of view. Another feature which is nice to have is the computer playing both sides in the game in a fully automated way. The game seems like great work in any case.
----------
All those features are already there! Please check out the online manual (https://www.aartbik.com/android_manual.php#chess) and feel free to reach out if you still have questions.

This game is extremely well made. The graphics are simple, the code is simple. There's no fancy animation, no ads, no calls to action, no mess in the UI. Because of that, it runs super fast. And it has a lot of features. You can play against a friend or the game itself (which plays very well), or set up custom piece arrangements to do experiments or end-games. If you ever pull out your phone for something to do, play some chess against this app. It turns your brain back on very quickly.
----------
Thank you very much for your 5-star review!!!

Guest

Brutal, even at the lowest difficulty level. This merciless piece of software destroys you in minutes unless you are a very experienced player. Not recommended for beginners or out of practice players trying to get back on the horse. There's no learning curve here, no fun. I'm sure professional chess players and masochists can add two or three stars, but I'm not one of them.
----------
Why two stars if the game is strong?

Guest

Very good. I was in a hurry with that last review (above single line). Actually this is probably the best and most sophisticated chess program i've ever used for Android. Lots of options, lots of features, connects to a real chess board, import other engines, it does everything. It's 2d but i hate 3d anyway and any self respecting chess player wants 2d as 3d is just for show really (like super fancy chess sets that are mostly for show not for play). Is there an opening book addition feature? That might be nice too. The older PC chess programs have a text file for your personal opening book.
----------
Glad you like it! :)

Guest

The menus and interface aren't intuitive maybe because I'm used to Winboard on my PC. Also I've been trying to analyse a position from FEN but I can't see the engine's analysis. However I can make it play against me. Can anyone help please? All in all I think it's the best free chess app but I've given only 4 stars because there's still a lot of work to be done to make the interface and menu more user-friendly.
----------
There is a detailed online manual at aartbik.com/android_manual.php which is hopefully useful. I thought I kept the menu structure simple and structured, but of course everything different takes some getting used to. Please consult the manual and feel free to ping me with questions.

Guest

Very beautiful app its incredible how is possible to keep all that smart funtions in so small size and reactive app. Definitively made by a real gentle chess lover and experienced developer with huge programming capability. I like all of it and it is for sure the best on the store all the other light years far away. It can connect, with all electronics boards on the market and for free too.
----------
Thank you for such a very kind review! You made my day!

Guest

Thank you for contributing this great, straightforward chess app with no ads and no spyware. I appreciate the focus on the AI rather than battery-wasting frills like fancy graphics. My only complaint is that it's too smart 😁 I'm not an experienced player by any means, but the easiest mode seems unbeatable on my phone. Something in between random and level 1 would be great.
----------
Thanks for your kind review! For the time being, perhaps you could train using random moves until you are ahead, and then switch to another level to see if you can win from there!
