Should I Answer? App DESCRIPTION

Get rid of the unsolicited calls once forever. Safely and absolutely free.

Telemarketers, phone scams or „just“ unsolicited surveys? The Should I Answer app can get you rid of all such calls.

How does the app work?

Whenever some unknown number calls the app checks it in its permanently updated database – immediately, without internet connection. If it finds out that other users reported the respective number as nuisance, it warns you against it. Or if you want it so, it can block it directly, the caller will not be able to reach you.

It is just the database used by the Should I Answer app which is an absolute unique part. It is composed directly by the users of the app: after each unknown call the users can rate it anonymously either as safe or spam. After approval given by our admins the report is then visible in the database where all users can benefit from.

What the app can do?

• It can protect you effectively against the unsolicited calls. You can set the level of protection exactly according to your needs: from simple alert of unsolicited call to direct blocking.

• It can block even hidden, foreign or premium rate numbers. Also you can write your own lists of blocked or allowed numbers.

• The app can be used as fully functional dialer app: you will find all your Contacts, favourite Contacts and complete call history in it.

• The app can protect you even offline. If you need to update the local database it waits for your wi-fi connection.

• It’s simple, even your grandma can use it 🙂

How does the app deal with your personal data?

Everything is happening directly in your phone, and in your phone only – your data is never by passed to some 3rd party. The app can’t „see“ even your own phone number, all reports are fully anonymous, the app doesn’t send even your Contacts anywhere.

This call screening app works great and does not bother you with ads and constant begging for pro upgrades. Setup is easy if you read the manual. I haven't gotten a single bad call ... no spam, no sales, only contacts and appointments.

blah

Spams your notification for updates every day and won't stop unless you manual navigate several intentionally annoying menus to do so or you pay them to do it automatically every month. They also lock out your control over the apps notifications in pixel 6. Sign of things to come, otherwise has been great.

OK so far. Can't find caller ID settings for outgoing calls, have to go back to stock phone app (which forces me to set as default phone app before I can use it) to change this to hide my number before returning a missed call for identification. [Edit] Latest update seems to have broken in-app database updates. Twice today I got notified needs updating but it doesn't work, and no manual update available.

Dis

Used to be a good app. It still works but getting multiple alerts every day to update the app is just annoying. Even when you manually update the app it still alerts you multiple times a day. And if you go to your alert setting to try and turn off just that alert, it turns itself back on. If I can find another app that works, I will be uninstalling.

Nina

Generally the app is good, but the combo of auto-updates being paywalled behind subscriptions and an unstoppable reminder that I "haven't updated my database in 4 days" 2 days after I do, it's increasingly frustrating. I would pay a flat, one-time fee to use this app WITHOUT auto-updating but WITH permanent/semi-permanent update-snoozing. Pay $X once to unlock "only reminds you every 14 days". Second tier to every 30 days. Is it riskier? Sure but that's my problem, and I'd pay money for it.

mork

Been using the app for years with a great experience. However, for a couple of months now, the app has been pestering me to update the database nearly every day. I don't know if this is some tactic to make me make the in-app purchase for automatic updates, or a bug on the servers end. Either way it's very annoying having the pop up reappear every morning and say I haven't updated my database for at least 4 days. If this gets fixed I'll change my score from 2 to 5 stars and edit this review.

I cannot believe it!! Finally a caller ID/spam blocker app that actually works!! With this app I am in control who I want to talk to, who I want to block or better than blocking a call and the caller still can leave a voicemail, with this app you can set it up to the" pick up-hang up" and the caller can't even leave a nuisance voicemail. Did I mention it's a free app!! You gotta give it a try!! 👍

Jim

This was a 5 star review. I have lowered it to 1 star because of the annoying multiple daily notifications that the database is out of date. The database cannot be updated to stop the notifications. I have read the explanation from the developer, and it is BULLSHIIT! Even if you manage to update the database, it doesn't stop. Optimum because I use phone only for texting and voice mail. Only existing contacts get through. Scammers and robocalls don't leave voice mail, so don't get called back.

Jemma

Should I answer used to be worth using over other call-screening apps even though it didn't have as extensive a database. Since changing to a monthly subscription model the app pesters you far too frequently to manually update the database. If I could choose to set the frequency or turn off the reminder then it would be a lot better. The dev says he was forced to take this approach, but that's nonsense. You can make a subscription option without making the free version unbearable.
----------
Hi Jemma, thank you very much for your feedback, we are definitely in a process to change the model somehow, the feedback from users will really help, much appreciated.

Alan

Been using this for 2 years to block incoming calls not in contacts and hidden numbers. Works well doing that. But now every 3 or 4 days it wants the database updated and that's annoying so dropped 2 stars. Maybe trigger update every 2 weeks or so. Otherwise have to get paid version to do update automatically. Annoyance will get me to look at alternative.

Christop

App used to be great, then I made the mistake of updating it. Now it bugs me every day, multiple times a day to update some database I could care less about. (I use it to block calls not in my contacts list) What's worse is I can't even disable notifications through the app on Android as the option is completely greyed out. Lesson learned. Don't update (fix) what isn't broken.

Igor

Recently started spamming daily notifications asking to update the database. Listen, if free users can only update it once a week, they should also be notified just once a week. Not sure if it's a bug, but clicking the notifications now opens the app but doesn't take me to the "manual update" page. This option is very hard to find it by hand, should be better placed in the menu.

Jay

Used to be a great app. Still is if they would get it to work. After updating it to a paid app, they removed the ability to auto update the database. Supposedly, it still allows a manual update, but it doesn't actually appear as an option in the app. When trying to report that as an issue, the reporting option doesn't let you type in anything more than a title and an email, no place to input an explanation. Hoping they correct this fast, but have been getting more disheartened as time goes on.

Leo

Before the limiting update it was a lot better, I understand the need for revenue but it seems the change is purposely awkward and you end up spammed with notifications to encourage paying. Auto updates could have been reduced frequency for free accounts, or at least an update button added to the menu instead of being buried. It ruins a useful app, making it a quite annoying one.

Mason

Updating the database is now a paid feature. If you don't pay for this, the app will continuously send notifications to remind you that you have to update it manually. To do this, you need to go to the 'About' tab, and click the tiny little version number at the bottom which does not in any way indicate that it is clickable. On this screen the tiny button to update the database is hidden underneath a gigantic ad to buy automatic updates. Before this dark pattern sabotage it was a decent app.
----------
Hi Mason, that's not a secret or special functionality, the manual update is very clearly described in the manual... New one is here: https://help.shouldianswer.net/help/database-update-notifications . Very sorry for this "bothering", WE must pay to Google for providing the functionality with data traffic, that's the trouble...

Radek

I've been using this app for a few years and it saved me from a lot of annoying calls. I supplied a lot of numbers myself. However, the recent move to paid automatic updates made me look for alternatives. They are extremely annoying and not seem to be deliberately convoluted. Surely there are better ways of persuading users to pay for the maintenance and development.
----------
First of all very sorry to all our users for this change... We were forced to limit some functions and move them under paywall - mainly for account settings and database update, because of the traffic we had to pay and our servers. Those functions are still there, but limited. Please see this article: https://help.shouldianswer.net/help/sia-plus

Daniel

Nice app! Blocking works like a charm. The only issue I have with it is that it doesn't save your selection on the familiarity filter if I close the app. Then, when I reopen it, I have to select "Show Familiar" again. Would it be possible to have the last selected filter persist across app restarts? Thank you!

Howard

I have used this app as my dialer for years and loved it. However a recent update disabled auto updates and locked them behind a subscription. It also now sends constant notifications that I need to update manually. The process to manually update is convoluted and coupled with the extremely annoying notifications seems a deliberately anti-consumer tactic to annoy me into paying for a subscription. A one-time payment for the app or annual request for a small donation I wouldn't have minded...
----------
Hi Howard, just try the force update, that should work without any change. Connect to the internet (wifi preferable), open the menu, select the last item "About", You will see the database version number in the lower-right corner : tap on it, then scroll down and tap UPDATE - the database update will start and finish with the respective message.

Mark

I'm just about to give up on this app. CAN IT ACTUALLY COMLETELY BLOCK CALLS OR NOT??? For example, incoming calls with no Caller ID are still being sent to VOICE MAIL. I've been told to set to CUSTOM CALL SCREEN and PICK AND HANG UP. That is not working. Customer support tells me the problem is with the Voice Mail app. But they say it definitely is NOT. They don't control if the phone HANGS UP. I am beyond frustrated. If they gave me a way to export my blocked numbers I would be long gone.

Damon

It looks like the notifications have subsided. Changed to 4 stars as I think it was a bit sus that I couldnt disable the particular notificatio Prev review: A recent update has made for frequent notifications to update the database manually. This wouldn't be a problem if I could disable these notifications. However when I disable important notifications in settings for this app it just re-enables that setting without consent. This was made to annoy you to buy the subscription. Bad app behavior.
----------
Hi Damon, very sorry for that, bug on our server. Should be corrected as of today, please try to update the db manually now - menu - About - press the DB version number in the lower-right corner. Very sorry again, if everything is ok, please consider rising the number of stars for us, thank you!
