xkcd – comics viewer App DESCRIPTION

Kudos to Randall, glory to all xkcd lovers.

This is yet another xkcd comics and what if articles viewer, while I’m refining it to become the best one, an easy and lite app with best in-app browsing experience[citation needed].

This app has so far:
– the best support to all those large xkcd comics. e.g. No. 657, 1040, and the toughest No. 980.
– native support for interactive comics like 1608, 2198, etc
– the best experience to read what if articles on mobile screen.
– the most fantastic list to browse xkcd archive.
– the quickest and most convenient way to check Explainxkcd, just hold and tap.
– the adorable favorite and thumb-up feature to your beloved comics and articles.

I am actively improving this app and related services, and it is fully open-sourced for every aspect of code on Github.

App REVIEWS

Ketsuban

Shows the explanation in the same app, no webview, very good!

Nadeem

Add a dedicated button for random instead of shaking the phone like an idiot if you only want to see randoms
----------
Thanks for the comment. Click on the date of comic will do a random as well.

sriki

Clean app and easy to use. But wish the developer adds a way to sort the comics from newest to oldest and scroll through it fast without loading the images
----------
Thanks for the advice regarding the sort. In the comics list you can do a fast-scroll by touching the right edge of screen.

Creeper

App is well-made and didn't take up a gigabyte of storage to install. The explainxkcd integration is a nice touch. Overall a very good way to read xkcd on mobile.

Benjamin

This is the best xkcd viewer by far! Clean design, simple features, all in one! On top of that, no ads or in-app purchases! Thanks to the developer!
----------
👍

Alexande..

Great App really amazing! It does everything you could wish for, looks organized and clean with a lot of customizability. This is the best xkcd/"what if" viewer i have found thus far.

Tree

This app is better than it has any right to be! Incomparable (because of how much better it is) to its alternatives. Everything is perfect. I especially love that the dates use the xkcd typeface. Congrats!

Austin

Best one I've found. It supports the large xkcds unlike other apps.

Steve

Best one so far, but still lots of room for improvement. Can't favorite what ifs, viewing graphic text requires long-press instead of just tapping (not only more annoying but also makes it easier to miss that they even exist; I was halfway through in another app before realizing that tapping the numbers & images showed extra text, & I may never have figured it out with this app), stuck on offline download with 1 left, if accidentally jump to random one can't go back, & explain should be a button
----------
Thanks for the comment. 👍 - What ifs can be favorited or liked once scrolled to the bottom, i.e. after finish reading the article. - There are some good features this app doesn't have so far, I will try to improve it for xkcd fans.

Update: the developer fixed the bug I mentioned and informed me of the jump to latest function, bumped to 5 stars. Original: Excellent app, simple & easy to use. No ads is really nice, and everything is organized perfectly. Just two things that drop it to 4 stars: there's no "jump to latest" button as far as I can tell, and comic #1335 (Now) is missing its preview, and it crashes when I tap on it to look at the moving version. Just two minor nitpicks, everything else is fantastic.
----------
Thank you for the feedback. #1335 should have been fixed now. Long press on the top arrow buttons will jump to the latest/first comic.

Abhishek

Easy recommendation This app is smooth, has no ads (I haven't seen any), intuitive and is an overall amazing package. Only request I have of the developer is to allow an offline mode. Great job! Edit: Thank you for the offline mode! This fixes everything 🤞
----------
Thank you. Currently comics are offline cached after loaded once. Still a lot to work on to provide a good offline mode.

Gene

At least give me the option of turning off notifications instead of forcing me to do it via the OS.
----------
This is a good suggestion. While at the same time, it will make people confusing if they can turn it off in the OS, but in the app the notification settings is on. and they end up not receiving comic updates.

Stephan

Have used the app for 15 minutey, already absolutely love the it. I will change to 5 stars as soon as there is a random button (shaking is very akward). Another idea: dark mode for comics as well: map the white background to dark grey and the black to light gray (not just invert the comics). Also I am missing an option to download all comics for offline access. Edit: maybe move the date to the middle and put a shuffle button to the left to keep the symmetry. Otherwise fair point.
----------
Hi, thanks for comment. This app is kept simple to not divert our attention from Cueball. An awkward hidden button on lower left which is the date, click it to do a random time travel between comics. Invert color is the cool feature of another app easy xkcd, I respect this idea and its effort behind, sorry I can't take it. Offline is difficult.

hale

Functional enough, but the font choice makes it unusable on it's own imo

Mox

I couldn't enlarge the images (poor eyesight ) the effort to create this non commercial app however is appreciated.
----------
I noticed on samsung devices the double click to zoom in an image doesn't work well. In latest version I've improved 2-finger pinch on samsung. I will keep looking into the problem

JD

Here's what's in this free app: no ads, dark mode, very fast loading, intuitive controls, solid search, useful options with no unnecessary bloat...this is a case study in excellent app design. Sure, it's a simple task, but it does its humble job flawlessly and that's surprisingly hard to find. Well done, author - keep up the good work! Maybe give some pointers to the companies spending millions to make much shittier apps.
----------
Thank you for your review, I'm very flattered. It is xkcd that keeps audiences amused, and me motivated to refine the app.

Joe

EDIT: Immersive xkcd reader app with lots of interesting features which, taken as an individual technical achievement, is exceptional. However my personal use-case is that I just want to see the latest comic and then be shown a random selection of comics when I'm waiting for a bus or on the loo, therefore the lack of a "random" button is a problem for me (shaking is a cool function, but awkward in practice). I suspect this may be an issue for other users too, hence this review and feedback.
----------
Edit: for latest comic, push notification or long press the right arrow on top bar will bring you there, I hid many actions like this, and they are truly awkward. I will try to make it adorable with a expandable menu or so. Thank you for using this app and feedback.

Anirudh

Easily the best browser of the best web-comic ever!

Luke

Probably the best xkcd app out there! Follows contemporary design trends, has a host of options, and is light weight and fast.
----------
Thank you for using this app.

Robert

Looks great, and the ExplainXKCD integration is seemless. I especially like the variety of favorites lists.
